What are the benefits of stabilizing soil?

Fines (or fine particles) act as a binder to help hold the surface of an unpaved road together. With a loss of fines (via dust), there is an increase in roadway surface graveling and maintenance costs - not to mention increased impacts to air quality, water quality, etc. One solution is to apply a dust suppressant product (dust palliative) that stabilizes the soil. Dust palliatives work by either agglomerating the fine particles, adhering/binding the surface particles together, or increasing the density of the road surface material. In other words, they reduce the ability of surface particles to be lifted and suspended by vehicles, aircraft or wind.
